Andy Malkus and Jon Varner have been playing together since 1988, but the current configuration of the Brand New Broken Homes (Andy on guitar and singing, Jon on bass and singing, Rich "Thick" Lather on drums, and Jack T. Treble on second guitar) began playing in St. Louis in December 1999.

Ever since that first show, opening for Drunkabilly at the Way Out Club, BNBH has been associated with the rockabilly/surf/instrumental scene, even garnering a 2000 Slammie nomination in that category. They've played with the Trip Daddys, the Cripplers, the Honkeys, the Red Squares, and Tomorrow's Caveman, to name a few.

While rockabilly and surf are influences on BNBH's music (along with 60s garage, 70s punk, 80s hardcore, and 90s indie rock), they mainly play raw, rockin' punk/power pop, with a sound that's been compared to Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, the Pixies, Mission of Burma, and the Ramones. Thomas Crone of CitySearch.com calls the sound "a goodly garage vibe, shambling, but sparkling."

At this very moment, the Brand New Broken Homes are in the final stages of preparing their Spring 2001 release, "Successful Habits of the Brand New Broken Homes."
